Scheduled domestic airlines carried a total of 185.46 lakhs (18.54 Mn) domestic passengers during the first quarter of 2015 ending March, according to DGCA released data. The domestic passengers during the period of January to March 2015 grew by 20.57% over the number of passengers carried during the first quarter of year 2014. The domestic passengers flying through the domestic airlines during January to March 2014 were 153.81 Lakhs (15.38 Mn). The total passengers flying during the month of March 2015 were 62.85 lakhs (6.28 Mn), up from 60.16 Lakhs (6.02 Mn) in February 2015, and 18.85% up from 52.88 Lakhs (5.29 Mn) in March 2014.
Passengers carried by Air India during 2015 first quarter were 32.93 Lakhs (3.29 Mn) while the eight private carriers carried a total of 152.53 Lakhs (15.25 Mn). The private carriers registered a growth of 23.82% in passengers carried in the March ending quarter of 2015, as compared to the same period last year, while the Air India registered a 7.51% growth.
During the current quarter, IndiGo lead the market with 36.6% market share and carrying 67.93 Lakhs (6.79 Mn) passengers. The airline has been slowly increasing its market share over the period of time. Jet Airways flew 37.14 Lakhs (3.71 Mn) passengers securing the second place with 20% market share. Air India was at third position with a market share of 17.8% and carrying 32.9 Lakhs (3.29 Mn) passengers. Spice Jet which carried 17.49 Lakhs (1.75 Mn) passengers was at distant fourth with 9.4% market share.
GoAir was not far behind SpiceJet with an 8.8% market share. It carried 16.39 Lakhs (1.64 Mn) passenger during March 2015 ended quarter. Jet Lite flew 8.46 Lakhs (0.85 Mn) of passengers and had secured market share of 4.6%. Air Asia flew 2.22 Lakhs (0.22 Mn) passengers with 1.2% share; Air Costa flew 1.89 Lakhs (0.89 Mn) passengers with 1% market share; and Vistara carried 1.01 Lakhs (0.1 Mn) passengers having a market share of just 0.5%.

The competitive space among the private carriers is much more concentrated at the top with the top 2 players cornering 69% market share. The top three players shared 80% market among themselves while the top four had 91% market share.
