Indian Automobile Industry News August 2014

The positive and upward movement in the automotive industry in India is slow yet is becoming consistent during these starting months of FY 2013-14. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released automobiles figures for the month of August 2014, automobile domestic sales had a growth of 17.5%, over August 2013. Automobile production grew 14.9% in the same month. For the period April - August 2014, the domestic sales and production grew by 12.3% and 13.3% respectively.

Passenger Vehicles sales had a growth of 12.5% in August 2014 compared to August 2013. Within this segment Utility Vehicles had an impressive growth of 18.1% while the Passenger Cars also grew by 15.2%. The Vans however had a decline of 20.6% in their domestic sales. For the period of April-August 2014 Passenger Vehicles achieved a growth of 4.5% over the same period last year.

The Commercial Vehicles registered a decline of 5.6% in August 2014 compared to August 2013, dragged down by the 12.15% decline in the light commercial vehicles (LCVs). M&HCVs however registered a growth of 9.6% in August 2014 as compared to August 2013. For the period of April-August 2014 the decline in Commercial Vehicles was 13.7%.

Three Wheelers growth in August 2014 was 23.5% as compared to August 2013. Their sales in April-August 2014 grew by 16.9% over the same period last year. Passenger Carriers and Goods Carriers registered growth of 25.9% and 11.6% respectively in August 2014 over August 2013.

Two Wheelers sales grew by 19.2% in August 2014 over August 2013 while for the period April-August 2014 its growth was 14.8% over April-August 2013. The Two Wheelers sub-segments i.e. Scooters, Motorcycles and Mopeds registered a growth of 30.4%, 14.45% and 31.5% respectively in August 2014 over August 2013.

The August 2014 growth in automobile exports was 15.2% over August 2013, while for the period April-August 2014 the sector grew by 21.3% over the same period last year. The growth in August 2014 was almost across the segments, except Passenger Vehicles having a decline of 11.4% in exports units. Commercial Vehicles grew by 5.9%, Three Wheelers by 59.2% while Two Wheelers grew by 18.1% over August 2013.
